X-treme Kimdog

Guess what I did today! I road 17 miles down a mountain. On a bike. Without a helmet. The AW was annoyed with me when I disclosed that detail. Especially cause I’ve been such a nervous nelly about riding in the city. But my parents sort of acted like I was a pussy when I considered getting a helmet from the bike rental place. Not overtly discouraging me, but I could tell they thought I had done got all citified be requesting protective gear. But anyway.

We road the Virginia Creeper Trail down Whitetop Mountain. We rented bikes, and they hauled us and our bikes up the mountain. And let me tell ya, driving up a two lane mountain road with hairpin turns in a 15 passenger van with a trailer attached was nearly exciting as the trip back down.

The trail its self was an old train track where they’ve pulled up the ties and tracks, and turned the trestles into bridges. It’s a nice meandering down hill ride through shady groves, along a creek, and through farmland. The weather was great, much cooler at the higher elevation. It was like one of the top 10 most fun things I’ve ever done.

And I didn't wreck. But I did whack my leg on the bottle carrier several times (I’m not sure how) and have this great bruise. I love having wounds to show for my efforts. And I am a bit saddle sore, too. But hopefully this has put me in better shape to start doing more city biking.

Tomorrow we are driving up and around Asheville, North Carolina. Cause I love me some mountains. And I got to get as hillbilly-fied as possible before returning to Gotham. Heaven forbid I should start saying “insurance” and “umbrella” with the emphasis on the correct syllable.

P.S. We just made s’mores with those new toasted coconut marshmallows. My god, they are decadently delicous. Go get ya some.

John... I'll be in touch soon. And I promise I will be taking you up on your offer!

Anon: I wish I had waited to take the picture today, because my bruise is even blacker, and more impressive.

I saw the pic before I read the post and thought it was the Creeper trail. Been there and done that myself.

I enjoy your blog. Found you via The Sporting Life.
